Surval Montreux is a small international boarding school for girls between the ages of 13 and 19. Set in a stunning location in the slopes above Montreux, it looks out across the Lake Geneva to the mountains beyond.

It is here that we offer girls the opportunity to love learning, to develop and grow intellectually, personally, and spiritually, and to become leaders. Without the possible distraction of boys, girls have not just equal opportunity but every opportunity to take the lead. They will be the leaders of the school community, helping to make decisions about their facilities and enrichment courses: they will have leading parts in the plays we produce, in musical activities, in sport, and in the charities we support both locally and further afield.

Every door is open to them as they develop into independent young women who have grown up in an international community and do not just tolerate, but truly understand, the value and importance of the beliefs, customs and traditions of others. They will be girls who will bring their intelligence, their understanding, and their sense of social responsibility to the service of the communities in which they will live.

LOCATION

Surval Montreux is set in a former hotel in a stunning hillside location just above the town of Montreux-the centre of the Montreux Riviera. The school minibus drives girls down to Montreux at regular intervals during the late afternoon and early evening so they can enjoy walking, cycling or roller skating along the lakeside promenade: or simply enjoy a coffee or hot chocolate with their friends in one of the many cafés. High quality shops are always an attraction, and in winter the Christmas Market provides an ideal shopping opportunity for unusual presents, as well as purpose- built cafés and restaurants, many devoted to the traditional fondue. ENRICHMENT

No school course, however well designed, can be complete in itself. The whole concept of enrichment must be an integral part, not an add-on, taking the girls beyond the syllabus and classroom learning to stretch their minds and inspire them further in all areas of their personal development. Our enrichment programme does this. Girls will have the opportunity to try a wide range of activities, academic, creative, sporting, dramatic and musical, as well as participating in charity work locally and in the wider world.

The key is to try new things, to ’have a go’ without feeling embarrassed or constrained by a lack of ability to shine. You don’t have to be brilliant at things to be able to enjoy them. We are looking for girls who are unafraid to take a risk, within or beyond the classroom: girls who understand that they learn as much from the occasional failure as from success.

Enrichment opportunities include debating and public speaking, with the chance to participate in the Model United Nations and perhaps European Youth Parliament competitions: film club, style analysis, school magazine, poetry club, creative writing, drama club, book club, art club, jewellery making, knitting, maths club, cookery and pastry club, charity work with Cartons du Coeur, and with international charities in which our alumnae play a prominent part: singing to and entertaining those in local homes for the elderly, or junior schools; International Award (known in Britain as The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme) and many others.

On the sporting side we are introducing Ski Thursday, where girls can ski or snowboard for a half or full day at one of the nearby resorts, and also take part in a number of snow based activities. The tennis court will be flooded and frozen so girls can skate every day in the winter. In the summer, Sport Thursday allows the girls a day of water based activities on Lake Geneva, where they can experience water skiing, boarding, sailing, kayaking and of course swimming at the Olympic size pool nearby. In addition to the timetabled sports lessons girls currently have the following clubs and activities; aerobics, gymnastics, yoga, running, ballet, tennis, walking, volleyball, fitness, hiking, biking, rollerblading and dance.

The trips and excursion programme encourages girls to get involved in both cultural and sporting activities, from the Qin exhibition with the Terracotta warriors, and the Tutankhamun in Geneva, to the world’s highest alpine coaster at Les Diablerets, zip wires or the aquapark. Weekend and week- long excursions are made to more distant locations such as London, Paris, Barcelona, Istanbul, Rome, Abu Dhabi, Moscow or Beijing, with new destinations added each year.

The differences between the High School programme and the International IGCSE and AS/Advanced Levels:

IGCSE exams are set and marked externally. All candidates for these qualifications, across the world, have the same exam, on the same day, with the same standards of marking.

Dates are published internationally, and have to be adhered to. Certificates are awarded in each individual subject at the end of the course (Grade 10/Year 11) and are recognised internationally.

High School exams are set and marked in each individual school, by the teachers. A Diploma is awarded at the end of Grade 12: transcripts of grades are provided for each year. Teachers choose what to set in the examinations, and the school itself decides on exam dates.

Choice of subjects. IGCSE candidates can choose from a wide range of subjects, and each subject will receive a Certificate, with a grade (including a failure if applicable) for the exam at the end of the course.

Surval students are expected to study a core of English, French, all three sciences, mathematics and history. In addition students can choose from a range including one further language (including mother tongue), English Literature, humanities, creative and expressive subjects, entrepreneurship (Enterprise) and international relations.

All will take etiquette (culture and customs) and cookery and pastry.

High School students have a prescribed program of subjects with a specified program of maths, and a single science, for each grade level. They continue with these subjects (subject to the changes in sciences) up to Grade 12.

Foundation Year (Us Grade 8, Uk Year 9) 13 To 14 Years

Surval welcomes students from the age of 13, for a Foundation Year which will prepare them either for the American High School Program or for IGCSE and A Levels.

Foundation Year has a strong language element. English is the language used throughout the school, and extra support for non-native speakers is given to those who need it. French is compulsory and another language is optional. Mathematics, all three sciences, humanities, drama and art all form part of the curriculum, together with the sporting programme and personal, social and health education, as well as a module on ‘Switzerland, our host nation’.

The combination of the academic programme and the wide range of enrichment activities and sport give the girls an outstanding start to their future at Surval; and the chance to make international friends across ages and cultures.

Foundation 2, for girls from age 12, is a special introductory course for those whose English is limited, and who are staying at Surval for a full five years. These girls study intensive English, and move on to French when they are ready. They take part in some lessons on the main curriculum, and within a year we expect them to join the full timetable offer.

IGCSE (14-16 Years)

IGCSE is the world’s most popular international curriculum for 14-16 year olds. IGCSE provides excellent preparation for more advanced study including AS and A Levels, as well as other progression routes. It incorporates the best in international education for learners at this level. It develops in line with changing needs, and is regularly updated and extended. We are delighted to have been awarded the status of a Cambridge school, and will offer the examinations provided by this prestigious organisation.

IGCSE encourages learner-centred and enquiry-based approaches to learning. It develops learners’ skills in creative thinking, enquiry and problem solving, giving them excellent preparation for the next stage in their education.

Each subject is certificated separately. A wide range of subjects is available, and we will offer courses according to the individual choice of the girls who join us. For example, there are many different language courses, offering a variety of routes for learners of different abilities. IGCSE develops learner knowledge, understanding and skills in:

Advanced Level (16-18 Years)

After IGCSE, students move into the Sixth Form to study for AS and Advanced Levels (A2), successful completion of which leads on to University or other courses and eventual careers. In the Lower Sixth, (British Y12, American 11th grade) students can choose four subjects to study in depth. This gives them flexibility, and again as a small school we are able to offer girls the courses they particularly enjoy or want to take further. They continue into the Upper Sixth, (Y13 British, American 12th Grade) with three, sometimes four of these subjects, or they can choose to start another AS Level.

GRADES 9 to 12 Accreditation

Surval Montreux having met the requirements established by the AdvancED Accreditation Commission and Board of Trustees is hereby accredited by the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement. The Commission on International and Trans-Regional Accreditation (CITA) is a division of Advanced Worldwide.

This international study program and diploma is aimed at students who wish to enter colleges in the US and Canada, Business Schools, or other instituitions.

The course offers a strong college preparatory curriculum with an emphasis on top American and Canadian university entrance requirements. At the same time, our students enjoy the benefits of a unique international cultural experience through a wide enrichment programme a strong emphasis on languages and exceptional opportunities for travel within and beyond Europe. Students can key into electives in the Liberal Arts Programme where their timetable allows them to do so. Classes are small and meet the individual needs of each student: help is always available for students with any special need such as dyslexia. Upon graduation, our girls are ready to meet the challenges of higher education in their own countries, the United States and Europe.

English language requirements for all high school students:

Minimum TOEFL score of 500 or Cambridge First Certificate If an applicant cannot present either of these papers, she will be tested at the beginning of her stay at Surval and if necessary, placed in an appropriate ESL class (English as a Second Language). She will continue to attend English support classes until her level of English reaches the standards indicated above.

Minimum High School Course Requirements for Graduation from Surval’s High School Program

Surval’s goal is to provide students with extra credits making them more competitive for the best universities and reflecting our international linguistic environment. Girls may combine the High School with IGCSE or in exceptional cases Advanced Level qualifications.

For graduation a student must have a minimum of 22 units of high school coursework, distributed as follows:

4 years of English 3 or 4 years of Mathematics 3 or 4 years of Science 3 or 4 years of Social Studies 2 or 3 years of French or another foreign language 4 years of Electives chosen from Foreign Languages, Business, Fine Arts and Others. In addition to high school coursework, universities wilI continue to use high school rank, grade point average, entrance examination scores, and other information in making admission decisions. Since admission requirements may differ among higher education instituitions, it is essential that candidates communicate with colleges and universities about specific requirements for admission and that the school is aware of each girl’s aspirations. Surval must receive all past transcripts and details of her proposed destination and requirements before entering grades 11 or 12.

Facilities

The school itself is housed in a former hotel, with all the facilities one expects of Swiss hospitality. Bedrooms are for two or occasionally three girls. All have en suite shower rooms, almost all have balconies with a small table and chairs for relaxation or study, and all have a fridge. Wifi is available throughout the building.

The housekeeping staff, under the direction of the housekeeper, Madame Horta, work tirelessly through 7 days a week to ensure that the cleanliness and presentation of the school matches hotel standards.

Girls are expected to make their beds and keep their rooms tidy. They are asked to take their laundry bag to the laundry each Monday, and to collect their clean laundry on a Thursday.

The dining room is one of the great attractions of the school. It is set for tables of four, with one long table down the middle of the room, so girls can eat in small groups or join a larger table if they prefer. The housekeeping staff take great pride in the dining room which is always a civilised and pleasant place to eat.

Meals, cooked by our team of three chefs, are delicious. After a substantial breakfast girls also have a break for coffee, hot chocolate or other drinks and a small snack. Lunch and supper are three course meals, always healthy and enjoyable. Special diets are catered for and these must be communicated in advance.

The Library, completely refurbished in January 2013, has comfortable seating with chesterfields and club chairs. Girls can read from the substantial array of new books, or watch films in the evening when study time is over. The large tables in the window and down one side of the room are for supervised study in late afternoon and early evening.

In the basement are a Jacuzzi which are enjoyed by girls after a spell in the adjoining fitness room. A large basement room has converted into a games room where girls can play table tennis, try Karaoke, dance to the Wii, watch DVDs or just chill out with friends.

The latest room conversion is the very large ground floor classroom into an art room. So many girls love art and crafts that the provision of an outstanding studio for this is a necessity. The room looks out over the lake and will be a much valued new source of inspiration.

For sport, we have an unusual tennis court-unusual because it is built out from the mountain, and also because in winter it becomes a skating rink.

Re-registration for the following academic year:

For all students registered in our Foundation Year, High School, IGCSE and A Level

Parents who wish to withdraw their daughter from Surval for the following academic year should do so in writing no later than 1 April (before the start of the summer term)

Surval will automatically renew enrolment and keep a place for students for whom no formal withdrawal has been submitted by 1 April

If a registration is cancelled after 1 April, the fee for first term for the next academic year is due

Cancellation and Fees Due:

Before starting at Surval (for new students): if a formal letter of cancellation is received before the payment deadline, a cancellation fee of CHF 5’000.- will be retained.

If the letter is received after the payment deadline, the fees for the first term are due.

If a student is withdrawn by the parents from the school during the term, the fees for that term, together with those for the following term, are due

During the course of a term, should a student be withdrawn from Surval with the consent of both parents and of Surval, only fees for that term are due

If a student is expelled from the school, only fees for that term are due

Summer Camp

A Unique Summer Experience from 25th June to 4th August.

Learn a Language. Learn a New Skill. Have Fun.

Girls aged between 11-16 come to Surval Summer Camp from all over the world, to enjoy the exciting and challenging sporting and recreational activities which a Swiss school has to offer.

Girls have language teaching in small classes (up to six), and practise their language skills as they explore the town of Montreux, home to the world famous Jazz Festival, only ten minutes down the mountain. Etiquette and cookery are great fun and very popular with girls of all ages.

The setting is amazing. Practising yoga against the backdrop of the lake and mountains is an inspiration in itself. Every type of sporting activity, from ballet to go-karting, is available, and the excursion programme is outstanding.

Girls spend the morning studying a language, either French or English, as part of a fun programme. They learn grammar and vocabulary through French or English films, songs and role play, as well as more formal methods.

They put their language into practice in the school community and, if they are learning French, through their visits in the local area where French is the main language. Classes are small, with up to six girls, and are taught by Surval staff.

Listening, speaking, reading and writing are all practised in lessons, and girls are encouraged to use their chosen language when they speak to teachers during the school day.

Outside lessons, everything takes place in English, but for the more ambitious there is an opportunity to speak to instructors and local activity leaders in French. Confidence in using a language is key, and local shopkeepers and drivers are always happy to help.

Girls can take part in a variety of activities, including: doughnut riding, banana boating, pedalos, kayaking, sailing, wake boarding, water skiing, wind surfing, rafting and swimming in the lake or in the Olympic swimming pool nearby. Girls can also enjoy trips to the amazing spa and the pools at Lavey les Bains.

Land based action for both the adventourous and beginners include hiking, walking, biking, tree top assault course, archery, yoga, tennis, roller blading, aerobics, volleyball and horse riding. All girls have the chance to join in these activities and a rota ensures they all have the opportunity to do everything.

This is a multi-activity programme for girls. We encourage everyone to learn a new skill as well as to enjoy those with which they are already familiar. Trying something new is half the fun!

Summer Camp includes etiquette classes where the girls learn how different nationalities greet each other, how they eat, and what forms of behaviour are appropriate in different countries. In addition, we also run sessions in make up, style and analysis, colours and presentation skills.

Cookery and pastry courses with our Chef, M Baumann, are the highlight for many girls. The opportunity to learn to cook. or to improve skills, is always fun, and several classes will lead to the preparation of some or all of the midday or evening meal, with suitably enthusiastic approval from the rest of the camp members.

All forms of art are offered, with indoor or outdoor painting lessons, jewellery making, masks, and a huge variety of other art and craft activities.

Many activities will be on offer again in the early evening, and girls can enjoy a relaxing session in the sauna or jacuzzi after an energetic day of action.

Our games room houses table tennis, table football, billiards, Wii games, karaoke and dance sessions.

Trips to Montreux, on foot or by minibus (or trip combination) can be an optional activity in the late afternoon, while for the star of the day student an evening trip to Montreux gives additional independence.

Fun Planet at Villeneuve is the base for many of our external activities in the evening. We offer mini golf, go-karting, laser games, bowling and we can enjoy a whole afternoon or evening session working round each of these activities in turn. Girls often return quite tired and are ready for a session with a DVD, a relaxing jacuzzi or just bed!

Surval’s Summer Camp includes the following day and weekend trips:

The chocolate train, stopping at Gruyères to see the cheese factory and enjoying a traditional fondue before going on to the unmissable Cailler chocolate factory. Even girls who have been to camp many times love this trip.

Montreux is not only known as “The Swiss Riviera” but also as an important musical centre. The world famous Montreux Jazz Festival is open from 5-20 July, with many smaller musical events and activities also taking place in the town, both in the streets.

The famous Château de Chillon is a must for those who have not visited.

Visits for interest, as well as for shopping, to Geneva, Lausanne or Bern which are organised for the girls at the weekends.

CERN, and the Aoste Observatory and Planetarium, are superb for those interested in science. Some girls enjoy having something intellectually challenging as well as the sporting and other activities.

Winter Camp

Our winter camp provides the perfect opportunity to combine academic and physical challenge in a beautiful region of Switzerland, with stunning views over Lake Geneva and the mountains from 3 to 8 weeks starting from 8th January till 5th March.

Those who join us as ‘Winter campers’ for part of the Winter term will become members of the international Surval community, and will enjoy many activities, and some classes, with girls who are here for the full school year.

Students develop their language skills either in English or French: they will have the possibility of classes in cuisine and pastry, etiquette and make up, an extra language if they wish, or additional lessons in a school subject if they need this: horseback riding is also a popular elective! There are plenty of opportunities for skiing-the whole school has skiing on Thursday afternoons-and also at a weekend at Gstaad, Verbier or elsewhere.

Whilst at Surval, girls will have optional excursions to places of interest-Geneva, Lausanne, Bern and elsewhere, to see local attractions and of course to shop!

This winter camp is available for between three and eight weeks and caters for girls of all nationalities between the ages of 12 and 19. As always at Surval, students quickly make friends across the world, and as they all say, friends for life! We welcome you all!

Combining physical activities with academic studies and beautiful scenery, the Surval Montreux Winter Camp is a popular camp that has been running for many years and provides girls from all over the world with a fun and rewarding learning experience.

Situated in a beautiful area of Switzerland with amazing views of Lake Geneva and the surrounding mountains, our winter camp lasts from 3 weeks right up to 8 weeks.

Who Is It For?

Our winter campers include girls between the ages of 12 and 19. Girls come from all over the world, and they join the students who are here during the school year. Girls from all nationalities meet and quickly make friends, and we provide the perfect setting to discover new cultures and customs as well as make friends for life.

Winter Camp Dates

We run our winter camp every year from January to March, and students can stay for between three and eight weeks.

Skiing

Being a winter camp, one of our main focuses is on skiing. The whole school can go on skiing trips every Thursday afternoon as well as at the weekends, and we offer lessons for beginners up to advanced skiers. Skiing takes place at Gstaad and Verbier, providing our campers with the opportunity to learn a new skill or take their existing skills to the next level.

Other Activities

We provide a wide range of activities besides skiing, and there is always plenty to do. The students can join in with cuisine and pastry classes to learn how to cook delicious local dishes. We also run etiquette classes and make-up classes, and horseback riding is one of the most popular outdoor activities we offer.

Language Classes

As well as the wide range of indoor and outdoor activities we run at the winter camp, we also provide language classes. That way, girls can improve their language skills in a fun and relaxed environment.

We offer both English and French lessons, and our experienced language teachers provide fun and interactive lessons to help students improve their skills. We also offer extra lessons in school subjects of your choice if desired.

Regular Excursions

We run a wide range of exciting excursions across the region, including day trips to some of the regional places of interest.
